Making Peace With Anger

With Kyle Sarrasin

It can take different approaches that build on one another to understand why you might experience emotions so intensely that they cause problems, and to help resolve the underlying issues.  Exploring the ways anger, rage, or anxiety developed and how they’ve affected you over the years or decades is often the beginning.  This might be followed by a deepening awareness of the beliefs, hurts or fears that drive the strong emotions you experience. It can then be helpful to incorporate techniques for healing old unresolved issues to reduce the intensity of these emotional reactions. This often leads to building self-compassion, strengthening self-control, and improving relationships.  Harnessing the motivating aspects of emotions can create more open, genuine and positive interactions even in challenging situations.  The goal is not to stifle or cut off our emotions, but to understand that emotional reactions are often driven by unmet needs.  Rather than reacting in ways that can lead to regret, counselling can help you meet your needs and develop the capacity to respond in ways you choose, with authenticity, calmness, clarity, and respect.
