Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

Introduction

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening-based therapeutic approach designed to support nervous system regulation, emotional balance, and a greater sense of safety and connection. SSP uses specially filtered music to help support the body’s social engagement and calming responses.

At Seahorse Counselling, SSP may support individuals seeking counselling in Courtenay BC and the Comox Valley who are navigating anxiety, stress, trauma-related experiences, emotional overwhelm, or sensory sensitivity.

SSP is often used within trauma-informed counselling and mental health support across Vancouver Island because of its nervous-system-focused and supportive approach.

How It Works

The Safe and Sound Protocol involves listening to specially designed music through headphones over a series of guided sessions.

The process is intended to support regulation of the nervous system and may be combined with other therapeutic approaches depending on individual needs and goals. Sessions are paced according to comfort level and monitored collaboratively within a supportive environment.

Therapy may also include grounding strategies, reflection, and discussion around emotional or physical responses during the process.

What It Can Help With

SSP may support individuals experiencing:

  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Trauma-related stress responses
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Sensory sensitivity
  • Difficulty feeling calm or grounded
  • Social or relational challenges
  • Nervous system dysregulation
  • Burnout

This approach may also help individuals strengthen emotional regulation, resilience, relaxation, and feelings of connection and safety.
